Here’s another high-performance sedan from Europe to challenge my driving record. It’s got so much to prove, and there was never enough road to get the full S4 experience. It made me wish I lived further out from Ann Arbor. The tall front grille is not as sleek as a BMW or Mercedes, but it’s the Audi face and it takes getting used to. The carbon fiber spoiler is a great cue that this is a serious driving machine. The V-8 is all power and polish, and really launches. At first I though it had a low redline, but soon figured out I was just reaching it quicker.

The Audi audio controls are easy to use, with the exception of the scroll wheel tuner. Being a Western Hemispherean, I seem to always scroll up when the controls mean down. I suppose I could tear out the switch and mount it upside down.

The seats are snug and everything else works well in the cockpit. The roofline is a bit low, however, and though I’m not tall, had to stoop to enter. But if I could afford this car, I could probably also spring for yoga lessons.

When did 340 horsepower start to feel so mundane? The S4’s steering and shifter feel isolated from the road, and the engine note is too subtle. The Recaro leather-and-Alcantara seats are beautiful. The interior is outstanding; this is, of course, typical Audi. This car really satisfies without making you take it to the limit to do so. No super-high revs needed here to feel pleasure like you did in the last-gen M3.

Like most Audi clutches and those paired with V-8s in particular, this one disagrees with me; and I know I am not alone in this. The pedal is too light, and there’s no feel at all. From a stop, you slowly let the clutch out and suddenly you’re in motion. Once moving, it requires some strange habits—what feels like too much gas too far before the clutch is out—to drive both briskly and smoothly. Speak to me, Audi. Please?

The previous weekend, I drove the A4 Avant S-Line station wagon, and so this is a variation on the theme. The Avant had Audi’s 2.0 Turbo, which has plenty of sap, while the cabriolet has the 3.2 six-cylinder. The six sounds better, but the turbo is more fun to drive. As with the Avant, the A4 cabrio is lacking lateral legroom in the driver’s position. There’s really no hope for human life forms in the back seats if those in the front get greedy. On the other hand, there’s still a bit of room in the trunk, even with the top down. Not a lot, but more than most droptops. The top goes up and down with the touch of one button and the HVAC is smart enough to turn itself off when the top is down and turn itself back on when the top goes up.

The A4 drives quickly and with dexterity, but the gears are a bit sticky. The automatic gearbox upshifts and then slows down as the new gear hits home. The Audi six-speed manual is much better. It’s quiet enough with the top up, except for the brakes; they made an awful scraping noise at low speeds, especially when backing out of a parking space. Rearward visibility is better than most convertibles I’ve been in, though the wind blocker is an impediment. It’s a fun little buggy, but I’d rather have the utilitarian Avant.

This is one of the few Audi vehicles in the press fleet without the S-line appearance and suspension package, and I was thankful for the standard suspension’s compliance on a trip from Ann Arbor to Toronto and back. Handling is plenty nimble, and the car isn’t phased by the Baghdad-esque pavement here and in Ontario. The 3.2-liter six is smooth and eager, and the automatic transmission in “Sport” mode is a willing partner. The interior is stunning, and the back seat is tolerable for adults—a rarity in open-top cars. This test car had the optional acoustically insulated roof, and it was tomb quiet. On the highway with the top up, it was comparable to an average station wagon for noise, and I dare say quieter than some folding hardtops. Until recently, a lot of Audis felt like not-quite-there versions of competitive BMWs, but this droptop A4, even in its final years of production before an A5 cabrio replaces it, is a compelling sporty luxury convertible.

I think my main problem with this car is that I personally find the four-place convertible in general to be a boring body style suited more for retirees and middle-aged divorcées. I want to carve corners, not cruise Main Street and pose by the curb.

That said, I understand the appeal of such machines. But while this A4 can handle the cruising bit okay, with good ride quality and cowl shake held mostly in check, it’s not going to draw many eyeballs. Without the steel greenhouse of the sedan, the A4’s shape is far less memorable, and our test car’s white paint didn’t help.
